BARRE, LLC

Two of my best friends have recently started a new company which makes great all natural raw food bars.  The whole story is complicated (and can be found here), but today I did a photoshoot for some advertising for them.  We had a pretty big setup.  12' white seamless -- many different outfits.  And I rented some White Lighnings for the shoot as well.  I usually get away with just my speed-lights, but this was going to be a lot of shooting so I new it would be worth the rental.

I have been playing with techniques to get a broad soft light source for dance.  This is a challenge because not only are you shooting full body shots, but dancing involves moving in the space as well.  I have never been totally happy with a large soft box or umbrella.  I went with a different plan this time.  I shot two strobes through a large piece of nylon similar to that found on a soft box.  I just hung if from a backdrop stand and setup the lights behind it.  I had one light coming more from the side through the fabric and one more from the front.  This allowed me to control the light a lot and allowed for a huge area of soft light.

Most of the images from today have a specific use in the advertising/packaging for Barre, but I liked a number of the photos just as they were.

This photo stands out the most to me because of the simplicity.  It is so easy to try to create some fancy/difficult pose, but sometimes pure elagance is more powerful.

I will be sure to share some more images soon.

Brett Staggs and more at BBT

Just finished up editing some photos from a show at the Bloomfield Bridge Tavern on Friday night.  It was a really great gig.  And a test: most of it was just lit by a single table lamp.

I hate shooting with strobes for live events, so I had my ISO cranked.  I wanted to use my 24-70mm.  It gave me more flexibility than a 50/1.4, but my shutter was 1/40 to 1/60 (and my hands are not too steady).  These are the kinds of challenges I love though.  I was really happy with a lot of the results.  This next image was a 70mm and pretty darn sharp.

I was glad to hear that people did not realize where I was.  This made me happy because I hate to be that guy that is just snapping away ruining it for everyone else.  And sometimes it forces you to find other perspectives.

Shooting live music has quickly become one of my favorite things to do.  So many things come together to create a fun time and some nice images.  Can't wait to get out there and do some more.

Kicking it off

Well, I have always thought that it was somewhat silly to keep a (we)blog.  But here I am doing it.  I am not going to rant or rave.  It really is just a place to document the things I do....which is just about anything.  I am a dancer, photographer, lighting designer, electrician, carpenter.  It just depends on the day.  I take pictures all the time during all of these things though, so I want to start putting them together.  Giving a context to my images.  You will see probably see just about anything on here that make up my life.  But mostly you will see the things that steal away the time.
